I never played the Final Fantasy MMO, but I do Recall hearing about its demise. If you're "On the Fence" about it, it'd be a good idea to wait until it's further Developed, Try to get in a Beta Test, if you can.
I played in the GW2 Betas, doing so convinced me to Pick up a copy. Unfortunately after it went "Live", people started leaving in droves--The game was rushed to "beat" the MoP release date, and it showed--The Auction House was broken for several weeks, Dungeoning with friends was hit or miss, Especially the first ones you'd encounter, they were a complete mess.
Diablo 3 was ultimately ruined by the RMAH.
MoP doesn't really qualify as "New", it's safe to say WoW has run its course (BC was still the "Best" expansion of the series, IMHO)
We're at an Interesting Stage in the constant Evolution of MMOs. Nearly all of them, aside from WoW, have Switched over to Free to Play, With some sort of cash shop, and it's certainly a big factor to newcomers. People are tired of shelling out $15/mo for a "Job Simulator" they may only be able to play a handful of days per month, or may not even be able to afford such an ecpense year-round. I know it's a big factor with any "Online" title I may want to try.
Many people now play casually, and will often steer away from titles that focus heavily on "grinding" or "Daily Quests" both ideas are exhausting, and are used far too often as Filler in the MMORPG games, which is one of the reasons games like LoL, SC2, D3 are popular right now--People are tired of the Standard MMORPG Game Formula.
