Well, it didn't take long for the blame game to begin, did it?
I do my regular radio show from 3p to 6p every day, and as I was on the air yesterday (12.14.2012) the news of this tragic story was still in development mode. People were calling the show, trying desperately to wrap their minds around what they were hearing. Why would someone do this? What caused someone to snap and go into an elementary School with semi automatic weapons and kill 5-10 year old children?
Each time something like this happens, video games get brought in to the mix as a possible reason why someone would do something this barbaric. And each time, our community takes in that (lack of) information with our jaws on the floor.
I have an 8 year old son. I know him because I talk to him. I know him because we spend time together. I know that he isn't going to see someone shooting someone else on the screen and think that in real life, that's okay to do. My son isn't a MORON.
Some people's kids ARE morons, and if your child has a propensity to violence, chances are you shouldn't let your kid play violent video games. Morons see violence in video games, movies, books, etc. and may be prone to act out on it.
I'm tired of video games being the media's scapegoat and to be their go-to, blind reason for blame when something tragic happens. People want easy answers. There aren't easy answers when we're talking about a 20 year old man who walked in to an elementary school and killed 27 people, including himself.
The glaring contradiction about the media blaming video games is this: CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and any other news network that you can think of, will show brutal, devastating and blatant violence on their news feeds - 24 hours a day. They aren't showing GRAPHICS of violence, they're showing real-life violence as it happens. I've seen dead babies being carried out of blown up huts in Syria and other parts of the World. They have absolutely no qualms about showing that without giving you warning.
Those same people and networks are the one's who are first to throw it over to us in the gaming community as the people that are causing more real-life violence.
Hey news networks, KISS OUR ASS!!
